  • Jessica Campbell, Studio Window, 2019, Acrylic rug on panel, 48 x 60 in, Plants Series: A Chicago-based artist and cartoonist Jessica Campbell (Canadian, b. 1985) is known for her candid, often hilarious work that blurs boundaries between high and low art, narrative painting and craft. This new series is focused on plants that loom large in the histories of craft and fine art. These new works reference both the history of naturalistic still life painting and a more idealized representation of plants in hooked rugs. These are part of an ongoing series of rug paintings that develops a hybrid form that draws equally from craft traditions, home decor, fine and narrative art such as comics as Campbell is an accomplished comics author.

  • Zsofia Schweger, Chicago Frank Lloyd Wright's Rocking Chair, 2019, Acrylic on canvas, 55.1 x 59 in, Chicago Series: The new paintings by Schweger take Frank Lloyd Wright’s domestic interiors as their subject: they depict edited impressions of Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio and Robie House, both of which Schweger visited during her 2019 research and residency in Chicago. She writes: ”Wright’s Prairie style has resonated with me; his straight-line aesthetic, as well as his belief in the decorative value of the flat surface are elements that I have explored in my own work. My visual style has been influenced by my upbringing in the Great Plain of Hungary, while Wright has also claimed that the broad, flat landscape of the American Midwest inspired the dramatic horizontal lines of his buildings. My engagement with Wright’s interiors is driven by this topographical connection."
